Over the years, many of you have asked me to share a go-to cookie dough recipe—the kind you can keep on hand, customize with your favorite flavors, and use for any cookie craving that pops up. So here it is: my versatile basic cookie dough recipe that’s soft, chewy, and endlessly adaptable. Whether you’re adding chocolate chips, turning it into cookie bars, or baking with kids, this dough is the perfect place to start.

Yields about: 36 cookies
Ingredients
1 cup (226g) unsalted butter, softened
1 cup (200g) granulated sugar
1 cup (220g) packed light brown sugar
2 large eggs
2 tsp vanilla extract
3 cups (375g) all-purpose flour
1 tsp baking soda
½ tsp salt
Instructions:
In a large bowl, cream together the butter and sugars until light and fluffy.
Beat in the eggs, one at a time, then add the vanilla.
In another bowl, whisk together the flour, baking soda, and salt.
Slowly add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, mixing until just combined.
Chill dough for 30 minutes if time allows.
Scoop, roll, or press into desired shapes and bake at 350°F (175°C) for 8–10 minutes.
